Dealing with Allergies and Hayfever
By Chilly Zoretic of NoWickChilly.com
Stuffed up nose, watery eyes, runny nose, headache, tightness in chest: sounds like the latest flu doesn’t it? But allergy (Hayfever) sufferers know these symptoms all too well. The worse part about allergies is that they last for months instead of days. If you happen to live in an area with year round allergies then you never get relief. Northern California Northern California is one of those areas. In the winter you will often get allergies from mold growing from the rainy season. Spring brings an abundance of flowers with them comes the pollen. In summer things start drying up and the dried grasses and dust are the major culprits, then comes fall, as the leaves start to dry and turn to dust and another wave of allergies hit. Northern California has a large number of major allergy producing trees, high on the list are Cottonwoods, Walnut trees, olive, Chinese Elm, Oak, Mulberry, Pine, Birch, Acacia, Juniper, Cedar and Cypress. All of these trees grow abundantly in the north state. There are also the grasses like annual bluegrass and others. When the grass is allowed to grow wild like you find in many areas, huge amounts of pollen can be picked up by with winds. Even well manicured lawns can be major allergy producers. While these problems seem concentrated in the upper Sacramento Valley, they are actually found all over the United States. Most areas have at least some seasonal allergies. Allergies are not only a problem in themselves; they also trigger other serious problems like asthma, and bronchitis. Help for Allergy Sufferers While living in Northern California I learned to live with a constant headache. But there are things you can do to ease the symptoms without resorting to a constant supply of allergy medication. One herbal remedy is a “tea” consisting of elder flowers, ephedrine, eyebright, golden seal and a cup of water. Drinking this brew 2-3 times a day has been known to help. Humidity: In the summer and often in the winter (due to heaters taking water out of the air) the air can get very dry, humidity can often help. A hot shower and breathing the warm vapors through your nose will often release some of the sinus pressure. Even boiling water and waving some of the steam toward you face and breathing it in can help. Herbs and oils: There are also many herbs and oils that are known to help ease symptoms of hayfever. Mint, Eucalyptus and citrus all can help open up the sinuses to help you breathe easier, relieve headaches and at night sleep better. None of which give you the foggy head of the typical allergy pills. One way I’ve found that really helps is to burn candles that have some of the oils mixed in the wax. This allows the oils to continue to help over a long period of time. The main problem with candles though is the soot and smoke, both of which can increase problems with asthma sufferers and isn’t too good for electronics and computer equipment in the area due to the film that ends up coating everything in the area. One way around this is to choose wickless candles like Scentsy. These products release the oils over a period of time without actually burning the wax, that way there is no soot or smoke. They even have a fragrance specifically designed to help called “Just Breathe”. Final Suggestion Resist the urge to constantly be taking aspirin (which can damage your stomach) or allergy pills. Where this will help in the short term, they can be side affect if you take them too frequently. Try to find ways to avoid the problem by keeping air conditioner and swam cooler filters clean, Stay inside when people are mowing lawns and fields or on windy days. Reduce the number of carpets and rugs in your home (these are pollen traps!) Keep your vehicles clean, all the cloth is another location where allergens get trapped and released when you get in. While you can’t eliminate all the problems, lowering them as much as possible and using some of the more natural remedies can help make those troublesome allergy season more tolerable.
