Lessons Children Learn: Elf on the Shelf
By Chilly Zoretic of Scentsy
With Christmas over I am looking back on the month of December and already thinking about next Christmas! This year we introduced my 2 1/2 year old daughter to the Elf on the Shelf. You can get your own elf or purchase a package of the official Elf on a Shelf that comes with a story book. The package was a Christmas gift last year so we thought our daughter was old enough to try it out. The story is one of Santa's Elfs from the North Pole comes to visit our house each day and watch the children. At night while they are sleeping the Elf goes back to the North Pole to report on the kids. We started by reading the book and then the next day the Elf came to our house to visit from the North Pole! Each morning my daughter was super excited to find where the elf was watching her that day. The challenge came to remember that the Elf moves around - and needs to be in a new place each day BEFORE the kids arise in the morning. There aren't that many places in our house that little hands cannot reach! It took forever for me to find new places. The last week of December we traveled to visit relatives for Christmas. My daughter was very worried about the Elf knowing where we were. Turns out the day of our trip the Elf was gone - he had gone back to the North Pole to tell Santa we were going to Florida. Once in Florida the Elf was back up to his old tricks and my daughter was very happy. The other challenge I have found is that my almost 3 year old doesn't understand that Christmas is over and the Elf has gone back to the North Pole. Although it would be great to have a third-party watch her daily for good and naughty behavior, I don't think mom and dad can find 365 places or remember every day! So next year, I will plan ahead by reading the book to both kids again and searching the internet for ideas of Elf resting places! |

Thank you for sharing this fine story on the Elf on the Shelf, Chilly. Our daughter-in-law did this, on this past Christmas, for our 8 year old grandson. It certainly added to the excitement, even though his 11 year old sister is a non-believer. Of course, she still loves the presents from Santa!! Keep up the good work. Best wishes. Frederick
You may want to look at the formatting so you get correct paragraph breaks. Otherwise liked the article a lot. Steven ;~)
